One useful piece of advice I received recently was to upgrade my cane. My collapsible “emergency” cane inadvertently became my everyday cane since fracturing my foot, and it really wasn’t intended for such regular use. For one thing, while I love the wooden grip it is rather unforgiving- wearing a bicycle glove has helped, but it’s a hassle to get the glove on and off (which happens 4-5 times a day what with meals and bathroom breaks).
In addition, it is getting a bit battered- the wooden handle is chipping from being dropped so often, and the inside elastic that makes it fold-able is loosening a bit, so it “clicks” when I walk. Aside from being somewhat annoying, it draws attention to the fact that I’m using a cane. I added an elastic wrist strap to hopefully cut down on dropping, but it is a big large and slides down the cane. I tied a knot in the loop to shorten it, but it doesn’t solve the sliding issue.
This is my new stick:
You’ll notice right away that the wrist strap is attached- no more sliding down the cane! It is not collapsible, so no “clicking”, and the larger, foam grip is much easier on my hand. The curve is good ergonomics and should take some strain off my elbow and shoulder. I already added my spare Tornado Rain Tip and cane clip. Overall it is sturdier and more comfortable, and was only $20- I am kicking myself a little bit that I didn’t buy it sooner. I never did “bling” out my folding cane, but with the ring for the wrist strap I think I could add some keychain toys for a little personalization!
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to use it the past two days since I am home with a horrific combination of sinus congestion (started as a sore throat so I treated that, forgetting that a sore throat for me is almost ALWAYS from post-nasal drip. Before I figure out what was going on it had moved down into my chest. Ew.) and a digestive disorder. May I say, one experience that I hope to ever experience again is eating dinner on the toilet with only one shoe on? I am doing a bit better today but with mild fever/shills (and that’s *better!*). I am trying not to angst too much about how being out today is impacting work- it’s a drama that I won’t go into here. I would really like to not be sick today.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend!
