(…Is Harder Than You Think)
So, I am still adapting to a Food Allergy Gone Wild. I have managed to almost 100% eliminate garlic from all foods, but it’s been very, very hard. I have found (much to my disappointment) that pretty much any red sauce (short of plain old ketchup) is bound to have garlic in it. Barilla has saved me for pasta sauce, but it does not make a great pizza sauce.
In fact, anything with “Italian” in the title I need to read closely. Garlic in my salad dressing? Sadly, yes. I’ve also found that most meat-free products have lots of seasonings, which includes garlic. In some cases, there’s not enough for me to react, although I can immediately tell if there is any garlic present (the Italian salad dressing made the inside of my mouth burn, but no other reaction, which was a relief since I didn’t think to check until the damage was already done).
Looking at the bright side, this is forcing me to eliminate more pre-prepared and processed foods, but it is making eating out in restaurants a bit of a crapshoot, since even if there’s no actual garlic in the food it may have been prepared on a surface that was exposed to garlic. I never imagined having such a severe sensitivity and it has made me much more understanding of my Very Allergic friends.
In other news, I am completely fed up with my belly. I have gained 5 pounds for every six months since I married, so I am now 45 pounds heavier than I was 4 1/2 years ago, which was already the most that I had ever weighed. There was some loss the year after, but it all came back with friends.
With exercise less and less available, I am trying to step up my calorie control in the hopes of slimming down a bit. Starting tomorrow I am going to restart Lose It to get back in the habit of tracking what I eat. I was saddened to discover that I have gained 15 pounds in the last six months- that’s just far too much. Speaking of exercise, my left foot is feeling slightly better but I made a doctor appointment anyway- limping has knotted up the muscles in my left calf terribly and aggravated my right hip and is utterly exhausting. I am looking forward to the weekend for sure!
