I love my family very much, but being back in my own bed in nice, warm Florida is hard to beat!
At the last minute I decided to take all of Wednesday off before our flight. I’m really glad I did- I was able to sleep in a little, do some last-minute laundry, and just generally not rush. We’d like to have gotten out the door a bit sooner, but it wasn’t nearly the trauma it would have been if I had worked for half the day. We lucked onto non-stop flights this time around, which really cut back on travel issues. Unfortunately, I was stiff, achy, and in a fair amount of pain the whole flight, but I survived. We took a cab to my parents’ to spare them the crowds at the airport. After a late dinner and catching up, we crawled into bed.
Thursday I got to catch up with my sis while Dad dominated the kitchen. Sadly, our brother stayed out in Iowa this year (just started a new job) and the empty space at the table felt like he had just gotten up and was in the other room. Afterwards we went to visit my best friend and my goddaughter to catch up with their family. She’s 9 going on 19 and I haven’t laughed so hard in ages! Hard to believe she’s a Bieber girl- I’m not ready for her to be a tween! We then headed back home for more dessert: cheesecake and dad’s old-style apple pie with raisins- sooo goood! The weather was mild so we took short walks around the neighbourhood between meals- just a few leaves left on the trees but I got my fix. “What’s all this dead plant matter lying around?!”
Friday my sister flew home early- we really had too little time together. I love her dearly and we don’t see each other much- hopefully she is coming down to visit in January! Friday was my other best friend’s “eat-up-your-leftovers” party. It was a small group but so great to just sit and talk and catch up. Surprise friends stopped by to see me while I was in town which made me very happy, and then MORE desserts were had! I think this was the only day I really ate myself stupid- it was all so delicious!
Saturday was a mellow day. We took my parents out to celebrate their 43rd wedding anniversary at one of their favourite restaurants. We realised belatedly that we’d never gone out for our own anniversary earlier in the month (we were both sick at the time) so it became a combined birthday (dad)/anniversary/anniversary dinner! We exchanged little holiday gifts early and dad was very happy with the chunk of Icelandic spar I found for him (optical grade calcite); heard to explain unless you come from a “rock” loving family like I do!
Sunday we flew home. In all it was a weekend of turkey sandwiches, many walks, family and friends. It was all I could have hoped for. ❤
