So much has happened the the past few days I’ll just try to summarize.
But first: a whine.
I’ve been patting myself on the back for a while now about cutting back my caffeine intake. Well, Saturday I had lunch late and had a nasty caffeine headache, so I’m trying to prune even further. I replaced my midmorning work chai with green tea today. OWWWW. I had to wait until after lunch when I felt slightly more human to even start this post. *sigh* I know it’s good for me in the long run- if only it didn’t taste so good!
Now, back to the last few days.
I met with my new doctor. The clinic is brand-new and literally right across the street from where I work. Of course, work things happened just as I was trying to get out the door so I had to call and let them know I’d be ten minutes late for my first appointment. Embarrassing! They were super-nice about it, though.
We are getting my paperwork from my current doc (I’m a wimp and let the office request them instead of doing it myself), but the very first thing she did was put me back on NSAIDs. It never really occurred to me to ask my current doc why I was still off despite having stopped MTX and Plaquenil almost six months ago. I take one Naproxen twice a day instead of my usual 1300 mg of arthritis pain killer. Much less pain, fewer pills, and we’re back to treating the cause of my pain rather than masking it. I only had to take Tylenol once this weekend, despite being more active than usual. A huge change! I’m really, really glad I had the opportunity to finally get a second opinion.
We also talked a bit about my weight and exercise. I’m doing all the right things, so that’s always encouraging to hear. She did give me the “Looking at you I’d never have known you have RA” comment, which I always feel a little funny about. What does someone with RA look like? What if I’d had my cane that day? But I digress. I decided to give Lose It! a try. It has the simple-numbers that I like about The Hackers Diet but with the GUI interface of Weight Watchers, so I’m hoping to make it stick and that it will help.
One additional thing I’ve noticed is that my blood pressure has gone up over that last few appointments. None of my doctors have commented on it (traditionally I was a little on the low side), but I’m aware of it. My blood pressure is one of those things I was relieved that I didn’t have to worry about it (my dad’s father had high blood pressure- we ate very low-sodium because of it and I never really got the taste for salt). I am hoping that losing some weight will help that as well.
Veteran’s Day! A day for remembrance. While I don’t have any immediate family in the military, we had family members who served in the past. We tentatively planned to finally take hubby’s car in for maintenance, only for him to be sidelined by getting into a computer game beta (Star Wars the Old Republic for you geeks out there) so I became a computer widow for most of the weekend. In the afternoon went headed out to Disney to pick up one of my best friends who was in town for a conference and spend some time catching up. We braved the Downtown Disney holiday crowds to help him find some gifts, had a yummy dinner (and ate WAY too much!) and just laughed and had a good time. It’s hard sometimes living so far from my family and best friends, so it’s nice that we live someplace that people come to visit often! Even better- we’ll see him again in two weeks while we’re up visiting for Thanksgiving!
One annoyance- on the way out we realised that we had no hot water. It hasn’t really gotten that cold yet, but it was about this time last year that our water heater conked out. We had wrapped the pipes and heater in insulation to hopefully avoid a recurrence this year- no such luck there. Saturday we dared open the front panels and found the RESET button. Did you know water heaters had a reset button? I sure didn’t! Sure enough, that’s all that it took. Yay!
Another lazy morning- I could really get used to sleeping until 8:30 every day! At about 1 pm we headed out to do some play-testing for a computer game that’s in development. I can’t share any details, but what I played was pretty fun and it will be cool to see if they ever release it. We got free pizza and soda out of the deal which was a nice bonus.
Back home and more gaming for hubby (and for me, but in a different game). Hubby’s computer has been slow for a while and we were debating upgrading some of his hardware when he noticed that only half his RAM was showing up. He opened his tower and found that a card was loose. Popped it back in and BAM! Faster computer! So we managed to save money TWICE this weekend tweaking things ourselves. Pretty awesome, if I do say so myself!
Wow- this just might be my longest post, ever! Despite spreading out cleaning over the weekend, I still went into a mad cleaning rush before having company over. I finally cleared off most of the kitchen island, swept and mopped the floor, and did a few other chores that really should be done monthly instead of ever six months *guilty look*. I then hosted a sales party (I even baked a pumpkin bundt cake! Yum!). I had already decided that I was getting several gifts, so it was nice to have people over to socialize and introduce some folks who I thought would get along well (and they did!). I gave out little favours of holiday tags made from recycled cards (I have pictures up on my crafting blog here: http://joyofmaking.wordpress.com/ )
The only downside to the whole weekend was being tired and a bit achy from being so active, and forgetting to do laundry! I followed hubby to the shop early this morning to drop off his car and we’ll pick it back up after work. It was hard to get up at 5:30 after three lazy days (not to mention that SOMEONE was a blanket-hog last night! *sniff!*) but it was really a great weekend.
