I’m enormously tired today. Our upstairs neighbours were at it again. Poor hubby is adjusting to his new work schedule and they’ve woken him up the past four nights in a row. I sleep with silicone earplugs, so they have to be really loud to wake me up, but they did at about 1 am. Soon after I went to the door to ask them to tone it down and one of their friends was pounding to be let in (why don’t they use the doorbell? Honestly!) I asked him to pass on the message to stop shouting. I hung out by the door and heard the response. Pft.
So we called the police, who actually appeared within ten minutes! This is pretty rare- frequently the police never show, or things quiet down before they arrive and we cancel the call. I don’t think it will change anything other than to antagonise our neighbours even more, but it was gratifying and let us get back to sleep at around 3. I am saving up a large amount of paper shredding to start at 6 am one morning…
Unfortunately, not enough sleep is only part of the problem. Thankfully, I had gone to bed just after 9 because I was tired. Waking up in the wee hours is never pleasant and thankfully my insomnia was not an issue, but I was in a lot of pain. I took an OTC because I didn’t want to wire myself up with steroids or risk the reaction I had to the muscle relaxant on Tuesday, and once things settled down I was able to fall asleep again. I am still in a lot of pain this morning, however, and the cold front that dumped so much snow on our friends and family to the north has finally reached us, which does me no favours.
I’m really at a loss about what to do other than keep filing police reports, passing that info onto our housing management, and house-hunting. It is so foreign to me the level of self-centeredness involved here. They just don’t care how they impact their neighbours, and since the other flats around ours are empty or full of college students, we’re apparently the only ones to complain. I feel like I should sit on the front porch with my cane and shake it at them and tell them to turn down their noise or something. I’m just so tired I wouldn’t care if I didn’t know that they’ll just do it again. There is so much else going on in my life, it frustrating to spend so much attention and energy on such stupid behaviour.

I don’t think there is much one can do other than move, but I’m crossing my fingers they just cut it out…
Paper shredding at 6am sounds like a great idea. I would play music very loud during their sleep time, but make sure it is music that will really mess with their minds. My suggestions: Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, Disco Music, Opera. Not that I hate all this music but any of this type of music would send my 20-something sons running and screaming with their hands over their ears. And don’t forget to put those speakers as close to the ceiling as you can (on a top shelf or on the fridge) and TURN UP the bass.
But I know you probably aren’t as mean as I am.
